What are the main data retrieval and reference areas?
The five main data retrieval areas are “Management Summary”, “Ad Mention & Share”, “Ad Data by Retailer”, “Ad Detail” and “Ad Price”. Below is a brief explanation of each data retrieval area:
- The “Management Summary”
area is useful for determining the Top five – one hundred brands within
the category types of spirits, ready-to-drink, beer, still wine and
sparkling wine based on ad mention counts for either the current
period, year to date, twelve months ending year to date or a user
defined fiscal year to date.
- The “Ad Mention & Share”
area is useful for determining the number of ad mentions a particular
brand(s) receives within a market(s) within a certain time period and
then relating that information to its category share and/or other
brands’ ad mentions.
- The “Ad Data by Retailer”
area is useful for viewing which retailers are advertising within a
market. The view can be changed to show ad counts for brands, suppliers,
or a total of the selected category. Also, clicking on the supplier
name produces a report showing a trended view of the brands advertised
by the retailer.
- The “Ad Detail”
area is useful for getting a snap shot of the context of an ad
mention. Information gained from the ad detail area includes
market, retailer name, brand, size, price, ad quality, coupons,
rebates, newspaper, etc.
- The “Ad Price”
area is useful for analyzing pricing trends within categories and
markets. Information such as low/high price, average price and
most frequent price can be found here.
The four main data reference areas are “Retailer List”, “Newspaper List”, “New Items”, and “Dictionary”. Below is a brief explanation of each data reference area:
- The Retailer List area is used to determine what retailers are available in each market.
- The Newspaper List area is used to determine what newspapers/ad vehicles are available in each market.
- The New Items area is used to identify new products and newspapers/ad vehicles added during the current reporting period.
- The Dictionary area is used to look up the meaning of data element definitions relative to the Featuretrac service.

How do I use the Netting features on the “Ad Mention & Share” screen?
Netting
is the term used to describe the process of aggregating ad mentions
based on specific time periods. Aggregated ad mentions (netting) are useful for determining the number of unique ad
mentions that have occurred within a specific time period.
Featuretrac.com has two predefined time periods used for netting – Day
and Food Week. Netting is accomplished through the following
hierarchy: National Chain Account/Brand/Size/Day or Food Week.
Note: Independent retailers are in essence their own national chain account for netting purposes.
While selecting parameters in the “Ad Mention & Share” screen:
- Go to the “Select Type of Ad Mention” section and click on the “Netted Ad Mentions” option.
- The “Netted Ad Mentions” section contains two more sub options:
- “Net by Day” or “Net by Week”. Select the desired netting option, in addition to filling in all other required parameters.
- Click the “View” button to display the results.

How do I determine the circulation numbers of a particular newspaper?
- Click the “Newspaper list” link in the main menu.
- Select the desired market(s) and click the “Get Newspapers” button.
- View circulation numbers:
- Simply mouse over the desired newspaper name and the circulation number will appear in the form of a tool tip.
Note: Circulation numbers are only available for newspapers, not home mailers
or in-store circulars. Every effort is made to list the
circulation of specific editions where available. If circulation numbers are not available for a particular edition, the phrase “All
Editions” appears after the circulation number.
Example:
- There are two editions of the LA Times that are available. Mousing over the editions’ names will cause that circulation numbers to
appear in the form of a tool tip. The circulation numbers in the
example below refer to that specific edition (Ventura County) of the LA
Times.
- There are four editions of the Chicago Tribune that are available. The
circulation numbers below refer to the circulation of ALL editions of
the Chicago Tribune NOT just the one edition currently being
moused over.
